Brain Damage By Alcohol And Drugs
One of the most harmful side effects of alcohol and drug is brain damage. Addictive drugs can damage the brain by causing stroke, seizures, and producing toxic effects on brain cells. Drugs and Alcohol can cause brain disorders and mental illness. The excessive use of alcohol and drugs can also cause damage to organs such as liver damage and heart damage. Drugs are delivered to our bloodstreams and in turn, move to our brain in different ways such as by intake of pills, smoking, injecting, drinking, and in many other ways.
Causes of Brain damage:
- Lack of nutrients that are required by the brain cells for proper functioning.
- Deprivation of oxygen to brain tissues.
- Death of Brain cells, neurons, neurotransmitters receptors.
- Changes in the level of neurotransmitters and hormones.
Brain damage caused by Alcohol:
This type of syndrome occurs as a result of alcohol abuse. This damage is caused due to lack of Thiamine. Wernicke disease and Korsakoff syndrome are two different conditions that occur at the same time and are diagnosed by checking blood alcohol level. Thiamine is required by tissues of our body such as the liver and brain. The alcohol level in the body reduces the ability of the body to absorb Thiamine. This disease can cause nerve paralysis and mental confusion.
Frontal Lobe Damage:
This damage results in loss of impulse control and causes inappropriate behavior.
Damage of Right Hemisphere:
This damage results in flat emotions and difficulties in understanding non-verbal communication.
Damage of Neurotransmitter system:
It affects the proper functionality of neurotransmitters and causes agitation, depression, and seizures.
Brain damage caused by Drugs:
These drugs slow down the functioning of the brain and are used to reduce anxiety. Depressants bind with the brain chemical GABA and inhibit nerve transmissions. Some common examples of depressants include Valium, Librium, Oxycontin, and Morphine.
As a result of using these drugs, the breathing is slowed and cause cessation of breathing. They cause a decrease in oxygen levels in the bloodstream. Common examples of opioids includes Vicodin, Oxycontin, Codeine, and Morphine.
They cause brain damage by killing brain cells. shrinking neurons and causing DNA fragmentation. Their action is similar to Nicotine and Morphine.
These drugs interfere with brain messaging system and mimic the neurotransmitters. They damage the visual area of the brain. Some common examples include PCP, Salvia divinorum, and Psilocybin. Its symptoms include numbness, nervousness, and high blood pressure.
